In math, this month, we will continue working on adding and subtracting numbers within 1000. We are learning different strategies for adding and subtracting numbers. Eventually, students will understand regrouping well enough that they can learn the “short cut” or algorithm–the way you may remember learning in school–but first they have to understand why that short cut works. In science, we will begin exploring states of matter and how something can change its state of matter. This is a very fun, hands-on unit!

In reading, we are learning about how text features can help us understand a text better. In writing, we are learning how writers gather ideas from different sources to write non-fiction. We are currently writing opinion pieces, but later in the month we will write autobiographies and then do research and write a biography.
